Trauma – it’s an experience that affects most of us at some point in our lives. Whether it arises from a personal relationship, an injury or illness, or an external event such as a natural disaster, trauma can leave us feeling overwhelmed, vulnerable, and disconnected. Today, more than ever, we are trying to figure out how to improve our lives and move forward despite the current global circumstances. The good news is that there is a way to alleviate suffering– through the practice of lineage-based Tantric healing methods.
Devi Ward Erickson is a tantric healer, author, and mentor who specializes in helping people overcome traumatic experiences through her unique approach to tantric practice. She is also a founder of the Institute for Authentic Tantra Education (IATE), the first Tantric-centered institution to receive government accreditation. Her holistic programs at IATE integrate somatic healing practices, traditional and contemporary Tantric teachings, energy work, and self-inquiry methods to harmonize the mind, body, and spirit. In addition, Devi Ward is the author of the best-selling book, Shake Your Soul Song, and Tantra is Medicine: Healing with Tibetan Five Element Practices.
Devi Ward Erickson also maintains a sizable social media presence and frequently interacts with her followers through posts and comments. She recently revealed how to handle trauma using Tibetan 5 Element Tantra. Devi believes that since the trauma is physically embodied, it can only be fully healed by working with the body and paying attention to the sensations it uses to communicate.
Here are the four stages of sensation that a human body experiences as unresolved trauma leaves the body.
Numbness:
Numbness or muted sensation is the first stage of trauma healing. It is indicative of an unresolved “freeze” or immobilization response. Physical, emotional, or psychological factors may contribute to this sensation.
Pain:
Pain is the second stage of healing trauma with Tantra. It can be interpreted as a sign that energy is returning to that part of the body as a result of an unreleased fight or flight response.
Irritation:
Irritation, such as pins and needles in the body, is the third stage of healing trauma with Tantra. It indicates life and energy returning to an area previously “asleep” or numb due to unresolved trauma.
Function:
Function, or pleasure, as it is commonly known in relation to sexual practice, is the fourth and final stage of healing trauma with Tantra. It is where the concentration of energy is completely released from the body, and the individual can move forward with their experience in a healthier, balanced, and harmonious way.
According to Devi Ward Erickson, these stages are not linear and can happen in any order or even cycle a few times before trauma is fully resolved. Ultimately, she encouraged her followers to use love as a healing modality for trauma. “Remember that pleasure is medicine, and love has the power to heal. – you can relax and breathe through each stage of your healing journey,” Devi said.
